But at what cost.īefore starting, I want to also pose a question: Have you ever seen or read a piece that has been translated across multiple cultures/countries? For me, I have seen the popular film She’s The Man which is actually a contemporary adaptation and americanized version of William Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night. ![]() ![]() The film stays true to the names, however to make it appealing to American culture, there were a lot of modernization changes to make the film applicable to the audience. Similarly we see this in Kidd’s chapter discussing Harry Potter and it’s many translations, not only strictly by language, but cultural translations. When discussing the problems of translation Kidd writes, “Translation is an element go both the production and reception processes, and it highlights how impossible it is to pin down meaning, even though meaning is incredibly powerful” (221). I’ve seen this discussion addressed in several ways. #Smartsvn checkout tv#Most recently, I watch a documentary called Exporting Raymond about adapting the American hit TV show “Everybody Loves Raymond” to Russian television with the new name, “Voroniny”. ![]() The documentary talks about how a lot of the humor and family ties are lost when adapting the TV show due to cultural differences. ![]()
